It was not surprising that "The Ice Man", Bjorn Borg, betrayed no emotion as he watched Roger Federer's bid to equal his record of five successive Wimbledon titles.
The world No1 was undefeated in 33 matches at the All England Club going into the final. Standing in his path was Rafael Nadal, who had beaten the Swiss in the French Open final just weeks before.
Together these men produced an epic final, pushing each other to the limits of their talents. Both players would float like a butterfly and sting like a bee but neither could deliver a knock-out blow as the first two sets were shared.
Having won the third set in a tie-breaker, the usually unflappable Federer was being frustrated by his relentless opponent and a succession of Hawk-Eye's calls that went against him.
Nadal - up 5-1 in the fourth - called for the trainer and had his right knee taped. He had not had a day's rest since the start of the week. He was sore, he was tired - and suddenly Federer perked up.
Nadal won the fourth set 6-2, but Federer could smell blood in the water. His mind, for once, was in total lock-down and focused on winning and winning alone. Federer claimed his fifth Wimbledon trophy 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-2 in 225 minutes. And that is when the tears started.
