Amelie Mauresmo came back from a disastrous second set in her semi-final against Russia's Maria Sharapova to secure a place in her first Wimbledon final.

Mauresmo had previously lost in three straight Wimbledon semi-finals, whilst this was Sharapova's third appearance at the semi-final stage of Wimbledon; in 2004 she went on to become champion.

The former champion likes nothing better than someone belting the ball at her, however Mauresmo was a different puzzle to solve - sometimes she hit the ball hard, sometimes she sliced it with finesse, sometimes she stayed back and sometimes she came thundering forward.

The Frenchwoman established a 4-0 advantage in a gripping final set and withstood Sharapova's increasingly ferocious efforts to recover. The Russian broke back once and had a point to narrow the gap to 4-3 but Mauresmo held firm to win the match and progress to the final.
