Federer, the world No.1 and defending champion, lived up
to pre-tournament hype and expectation by fighting back to
defeat Andy Roddick and claim his second Wimbledon title.
It was the first Wimbledon final between the top two seeds for 22 years (when Jimmy Connors beat John McEnroe) - and fulfilled all hopes of drama and genius as the climax of the fortnight.
With rain twice forcing short breaks in the play, Roddick
- who lost to Federer at the semi-final stage in 2003 - surprised
the Swiss by following his venomous serve and big forehand
to the net. He took the opening set, came very close to winning
the second and was 4-2 up in the third when rain intervened.
During the break Federer re-evaluated his tactics, decided
to serve and volley more, and dramatically swung the match
in his favour.
The American's consolation, in a final played on his nation's
Independence Day, was to have participated in a great contest.
