Maria Sharapova (RUS) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Ladies' Singles Quarter-Final - 2006

It takes a lot to upstage Maria Sharapova, especially on Centre Court, but it is possible. The male streaker who ran on to the court in Sharapova's quarter-final with compatriot Elena Dementieva managed it, after all. Admittedly, he had to be stark naked - bar his socks and shoes - to do it, but for a brief moment he was the star of the show.

The match started with 19-year-old Sharapova seemingly picking up where she left off in her recent thrashing of the 24-year-old Dementieva in Indian Wells, taking the first set after just 27-minutes of one-sided play.

The crowd, lulled into torpor by the one way traffic at 6-1, 3-0, was suddenly brought to its senses when the streaker leapt from the stands and cart wheeled across the Royal Box end of the court before being bundled out of sight by the security officers who covered his embarrassment with a large, orange blanket.

The uninvited entrance of the streaker failed to impress Sharapova, who simply turned her back, kept her concentration and waited to complete her job, which she did with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

He did at least bring a smile to the face of Dementieva, whose own failings had already been well exposed by Sharapova's display.
