Wimbledon Review 1987

Going into the 1987 Championships, Boris Becker was looking to become emulate such players as Bjorn Borg and Fred Perry in winning three consecutive Wimbledon singles titles.

However, in a first week constantly interrupted by rain, Becker's hopes die as he slides to dramatic defeat at the hands of unknown Australian Peter Doohan.

With the hot favourite gone, the most open Men's tournament in years sees the World Champion Ivan Lendl claw his way to his second successive final and his second successive defeat; this time against the grass court magic of Pat Cash.

As for the ladies; it's really about the top two seeds, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. Martina's after Helen Wills-Moody's record of 8 single titles and a new one of her own - six in a row. But Steffi is the player in form, hungy for navratilova's position as the world's number one. They meet in a tense, dramatic final that sees navratilova show one again that Wimbledon brings out her best.
